Banana barrel bridge
The dedication

Parents helped assemble a day care center playground in a beautiful, cloistered garden in the middle of Manhattan using pre-fabricated parts [see 'Early Playgrounds']. It was then dedicated in the High Anglican style of its surroundings, complete with 'smells and bells'.

An existing, old fashioned monkey bar structure was linked to the new one with a covered bridge and was made safer and less scary by adding intermediate levels and a roof to set a limit on how high monkeys could climb. To carry the monkey metaphor a bit further, steel drums that once contained Bonita banana puree were turned into slides, bridges and roofs in the days before plastic parts and safety guidelines were widely available.
